District # 11 in the south-west corner of town was sometimes called the Bourbon District and in later days, the Mallory District.  On the 1874 map there are no school buildings identified.  This could have been an oversight on the part of the map-maker, or it could be that there was no school in session there that year.  This may even have been a Union District, that is, a district that crossed town lines, with the kids going to school in New Hartford or Winchester.  When there were too few students in a particular area to justify holding school there, the town might tuition them into a neighboring school district for a term or two.  If you look at Town expenses from the 1880s you will see expenditures for school expenses paid to Hartland, Canton or to Winsted. If we look at an older map, in this case a section of the Clark 1859 Litchfield County map, we get more information.  While district lines are not shown, the school buildings are identified and we see that all the schools mentioned thus far seem to have been in existence in 1859.  A school building is identified in the Southwest district at what is now the corner of Bsullack and East West Hill Roads.  No information is currently available on this building. Another school is shown just east of what is today Mallory Plaza: this would be the Mallory School. It’s not known when this brick building was constructed, but it served the neighborhood as a district school on and off until 1938 at which time the students were transferred to Pleasant Valley. The building is still in place today but is privately owned.
