Children at School in Barkhamsted

A collection of historical images.

Authored and Curated by Mike Day

It was traditional in the early 20th Century for the various one room schoolhouses in Barkhamsted to have a picture taken annually of the entire class standing in front of the schoolhouse building.  In many cases these pictures were reproduced as post cards that were shared with relatives of the students.  Also circulating within the community were various group photos of the different class groups.  Often these pictures had information on the back identifying the individual students.  This album, “Children at School in Barkhamsted”, is an on-going project to collect and share these images.  Many of the images are now part of the BHS collection, but others are drawn from the State Library, the Connecticut Historical Society or from private collections.

Class Photos & Schoolhouse Galleries

The images are organized by the school district number, from one to twelve, with a “BES” section for pictures of graduating classes from Barkhamsted Elementary School.  The pages in this album show the image, often with numbers superimposed to aid identification.  Additional information is provided to help locate the original photo. Names that we know are shown with each image you can also click here for an alphabetical listing of all the students & teachers that have been identified to date. It is the goal of this project to make digital copies of the images (without the numbers superimposed) available to those who want them.

Help Us Fill in the Blanks!

Please note that there are images of school groups in this collection about which we have no current information.  Also, not every student in every picture is identified: sometimes the handwriting is too hard to read.  So, consider this a first step in locating the available pictures of your ancestor.  There may be more in the collection if you dig a bit deeper.

Feel free to add additional information and/or pictures to the collection.  We are always interested in acquiring digital scans of relevant pictures: you don’t have to part with what may be a cherished heirloom photo.  Come visit or email us at bhs@barkhamstedhistory.us.
