The Riverton district was, at least in terms of population, the largest district and was the last to close in favor of the Pleasant Valley School.  There was a school in Riverton as early as 1827, on the land across from the present Congregational Church, but it was destroyed by a fire in 1850.  It was replaced with our first two room school on what is now School Street, the road that borders the old Hitchcock factory.  Having two rooms allowed the community to have both a common school and a grammar school. In time the two rooms became simply an upper and a lower section of the same school.  In 1950 the Barkhamsted Board of Education voted to have all the town’s first and second graders attend the Riverton School; and all the older students attend the Pleasant Valley School, with the school buses stopping at both buildings.  Two years later the Riverton building was closed and all students transferred to Pleasant Valley.  The building was used for a while as a house; then sold to the Hitchcock Chair Company; and in 1963 it was sold to the Duralite Company which enlarged and still occupies the structure. For a period in the 1840s to1850s there was a “Hitchcockville High School” that operated in a building behind the Episcopal Church in Riverton.  An 1851 document identifies some forty students.  While most were from “Hitchcockville,” students also came from Canton, Colebrook, Hartland and Winsted.  It is not known how long the school operated, or when it went out of business.
