Pleasant Valley School based on position of doorway.  18 boys, 9 girls.

There are at least two copies of this item at the Tavern.  Note the wood work to the right side of the door.  It is different from many later pictures which give a clue to its date.

Original is stored at Squire’s Tavern as item #1999.25.90.0 in Box 1 - People.  A digital copy is available as item # MD-25.

Pleasant Valley School, 1915

Taken from a post card belonging to Doug.

This is definitely the PV School because of the distinctive roof overhang and position of the door.  A note on the back of the card suggests that the teacher is Frances Meagher (later Goodwin).  Miss Meagher was the teacher at Pleasant Valley in the 1914-1915 school year.  Designs on the back of the card are consistent with marks used from 1904 to 1918.   33 kids – 16 boys, 17 girls.

Pleasant Valley School, Date Unknown

27 kids – 15 boys, 13 girls.   A note on the back says that the teacher is Lillian Phillips, but there is no record of a teacher named either Lillian or Phillips working in Barkhamsted.  The teacher of record at PV School from 1930 to 1939 was Marjorie Emily Cole.

Pleasant Valley School, Date Unknown

This is the Pleasant Valley School based on location of the door.  13 boys, 10 girls.

Note the wall to the right side of the door.  The wooden boards are different, much wider than those seen in pictures taken after, say, 1900-1905.   This may help to date the photo.

The original is item 1999.25.104.0 in Box 4 (People).

Our digital copy of this image is MD-33.
